Scottish Games Industry raises over £66k for Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity in less than a year

The award-winning Games for the Weans campaign saw funds raised by game developers and publishers like No Code, Hyper Luminal Games and Astrodreamer Studio.

Glasgow, Scotland - 28th November, 2023 - Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity is delighted to reveal that the Games for the Weans campaign has raised over £66,000 in 2023.

The campaign, which won a Glasgow Business Award in October, has received overwhelming support from across the Scottish games industry since January, including donations raised by No Code, Nerial, Geek-aboo, and Ninja Kiwi.  This includes funds raised by the first ever Scottish Games Steam Sale, curated by Neonhive, which featured over 100 different games and demos from Scottish developers and publishers on Steam in September.  The total raised by the week-long event came to over £13,000, plus an extra £2,000 donation from No Code on the first night of the event.

And that’s not all!  Earlier this year, Hyper Luminal Games also raised over £5,900 completing the Kiltwalk with the largest corporate team in Dundee with 70+ walkers.  Meanwhile, the Caledonian Chargers eSports society from Caledonian University raised over £5,200 by taking part in the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity Sponsored Walk and streaming during Freshers’ Week; Astrodreamer Studio raised £890 hiking up the Sidlaws; and generous sponsors Ninja Kiwi, Nerial and Geek-aboo raised £7,000, with Ninja Kiwi adding another £1,000 in the Scottish Games Sale.

Over £4,000 was also raised in two online raffles during the campaign, which featured prizes from, among others, Dell, R-Cade, Geek-aboo, Super Rare Games, GT Omega and the Xbox/Gordon Nicolson Kiltmakers collab.

Campaign sponsors Ninja Kiwi gifted soft toys to patients in the children’s hospital like Preston, 6
Children like Harris, 7, will benefit from an improved gaming experience in the hospital

The funds raised as part of the Games for the Weans campaign will go towards buying adapted gaming equipment, consoles and video games for the hundreds of children across Scotland who are treated at the children's hospital in Glasgow every day, as well as support the hospital's Play Team - so that children in hospital always have someone to play with. The charity has also begun to seek Gaming Volunteers to game with children in the hospital.

“The way Scotland’s gaming community has come together for children in hospital has been remarkable.  From solo developers turning their passion projects into fundraisers, to larger studios walking for Scotland’s youngest gamers in hospital, it has been a joy to see Games for the Weans unfold in 2023,” said Kirsten Watson, CEO at Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity.  “To each and every person who has donated towards this astonishing total, thank you so much.”
“Nerial is proud to support the outstanding Games for the Weans campaign. We’re so pleased that so many children will have some fun and be entertained during difficult hospital visits,” added Tamara Alliot, CEO of Nerial.
“It is awesome to see the life-changing amount raised by the Games for the Weans campaign. Ninja Kiwi are very proud to have played a small part in such a fantastic campaign,” said Danny Parker, Executive Vice President at Ninja Kiwi.  “At the most challenging of times for any child, the team at Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity work tirelessly to find ways for the children and their families to play together, have some fun, and find a little much needed respite. The money raised will allow them to help even more children, and offer new ways for them to play.”
